Green Bio Energy is a social business in Uganda, that is tackling the impacts wood based fuel use in developing communities.
Green Bio Energy began by producing clean energy cooking solutions like cooking stoves and eco-friendly briquettes, as well as promoting the use of clean energy products through conducting trainings in low income communities.
Yunus Social Business invested $65000 in Green Bio Energy in 2015 to develop a new line of carbon briquettes and to scale up capacity of the stove production. YSB also provided capacity building training for Green Bio Energy staff in the areas of financial management, marketing and inventory management.
Green Bio Energy was also connected with other impact investing organizations and local public sector stakeholders. This enabled them to secure further investment and grow their networks.
Green Bio Energy has made significant social and environmental impacts. The business has been able to recycle over 1400 tons of organic waste, preserved 30,000 tons of trees, and offset over 60,000 tons of CO2. Green Bio Energy has enabled their customers to save 1,046,369 USD and provided 112,855 USD of income for 300 employees and value -chain actors. The business has also conducted over 400 training sessions with a focus on empowering women in the clean energy value chain.
